Bottom line, I feel that Donovan McNabb, and Ryan Howard have been greatly under appreciated in Philadelphia. The Eagles were worse than terrible before Donovan McNabb was drafted in 1999. Do I really have to go through the big pile of dog crap that they had at the QB position the 2 or 3 years prior to Mac 5?
Donovan almost single handedly made the Eagles a Super Bowl contender for the better part of a decade. Even guys who won the Super Bowl during McNabb’s stay in Philly can’t say that: Kurt Warner, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, and Eli Manning. It took Drew Bress a couple of seasons with the Saints before they could even break the .500 mark. So where is the respect for what Donovan HAS done, compared to all the hate he gets for what he hasn’t done?
I’m a Washington Redskins fan, a team who hasn’t had a stable QB for a long time, and I marvel at how Eagles fans think that McNabb is garbage? McNabb did come to the Redskins last season and had a sub par season, but there have been a ton of players who go to a new team after 10 season with one team and under perform a little. Not to mention, Mike Shanahan isn’t the easiest guy to get along with either, just ask Brian Griese, Jake Plummer, and Albert Haynesworth.
***Side note – In no way do I think Haynesworth had any merit for what he did over the past two seasons with the Redskins***
Anyway, the Super Bowl isn’t just something that drops into any given players lap and is just awarded to them. Everyone in the NFL is vying for the Super Bowl, that is why it is so prestigious. There are many Hall of Fame QB’s who didn’t win a Super Bowl i.e. Dan Marino, and Dan Fouts. In my eyes it doesn’t make them any less talented of a player. Football is a team sport, and if you have ever played any team sports, you realize that even the slightest hiccup can throw teams off track, and that bad breaks happen. Sometimes as a player you only get one chance to achieve a goal. Philly needs to embrace McNabb for what he is, that being the greatest quarterback the Philadelphia Eagles have ever had.
Ryan Howard on the other hand HAS won a World Series, and STILL doesn’t get any love from the fans. For some reason all the fans can see are the strikeout numbers. I think some of that has to do with the emergence of fantasy baseball, and people keeping track of specific stats. Howard wouldn’t be my first choice for a fantasy team. He would be near the top of a wish list if I had an MLB team, after seeing everything he brings to the table for the Phillies.
When you talk about a player who almost never gets a day off during a 162 game season, and don’t forget a ton of playoff games over the past three seasons, who wouldn’t want a warrior like that?
Middle of the line up type hitters like Howard do not grow on trees, take a look around MLB. Specifically the Oakland A’s, Mariners, Padres, Nationals, and Astros to name a few. Yes the Phillies have some other star hitters like Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins, but the Phillies didn’t turn into the power they are now until Howard replaced Jim Thome at first. This season, the Phillies have awesome pitching, and that is a huge factor and reason why they have been the best MLB team throughout this season, but Ryan Howard is the heartbeat of this team. Philly needs to embrace Howard for that reason.
