Coven is American Horror Story’s 3rd go-round with demented, haunting, and creepy imagery. Christina and I watched the first season on Netflix a few months ago and were caught off guard with its disturbing nature. Both of us were of the mind set that material like AHS couldn’t exist on cable TV. I’m glad that it does though, because it made for a very compelling show. When we saw the advertisements for American Horror Story: Coven in October, we immediately marked the calendar.
Anyway… I’m bringing all of this to your attention for a sole reason. And believe it or not, that reason has nothing to do with anything scary or horrible, which is AHS’s bread and butter. It’s for a singular quote from Coven’s 7th episode.
First, for those who haven’t watched the show, I’ll give you a snippet of back-story so you can appreciate the quote that had Christina & I laughing out loud.
Madame Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) was cursed with immortality and buried alive as punishment for her torturous actions towards her slaves and gross mistreatment of black people by her nemesis Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett), a witch who practices Voodoo, roughly 200 years before the current scenes of the show take place.
In a previous episode, Madame Delphine LaLaurie was dug up by a foe of Marie Laveau – Fiona Good (Jessica Lange) who is “The Supreme” of the witch coven. Fiona’s intentions for Madame LaLaurie aren’t clear yet, so Fiona has her working as a maid in the coven.
The scene that had Christina and I hysterical features Kathy Bates and Gabourey Sidibe.
Queenie is looking for a late night snack but can’t find anything to eat in the coven’s kitchen. So she says something about it to Madame LaLaurie. Madame doesn’t know what happened to all the food, but acknowledges she could eat something too. The scene cuts to Queenie and Madame sitting at the drive thru of some fast food joint. Madame is spooked when she doesn’t know where the voice from the ordering speaker is coming from. She hasn’t been outside the coven walls since being uncovered by Fiona. Queenie orders for both then the scene cuts to both of them sitting in the car grubbing on burgers and fries… Which sets up a quote for the ages!
Madame LaLaurie starts raving about how delicious the cheeseburger is while Queenie nods in agreement. Both characters are laughing it up and stuffing their face. With a burger in hand, Madame LaLaurie drops a quotes for the ages! She looks over at Queenie and says, “With food like this, now I understand why you’re so enormous.”
Simply classic. That quote made my day.
