Sunday Night Football 10/18/15. The New England Patriots vs the Indianapolis Colts. The swinging gate.
Chuck Pagano, you should be ashamed of yourself, calling a play like that… Some pundits are saying it is the worst play ever ran on a football field. And they might be right. Then again, when it comes to the “Worst All-Time,” it isn’t easy to out do the Washington Redskins. In 2009, the Redskins ran a version of the swinging gate out of a field goal formation… and it didn’t go well.
Any formation or pre-planned play when the kicker goes in motion should be permanently placed on the shelf.
The only thing I have to say about this: Chuck Pagano… This isn’t JUST a bad play call that was executed horribly. This is a terrible play call in a game that was not out of hand, against a very good team who has had your number in head-to-head match-ups. A team that is always well prepared. That is NOT, I repeat, NOT the situation to try to get cute. You’re basically telling yourself and your team that you don’t think you’re good enough as a team to go toe-to-toe with the Patriots with an awful play call like that. You may have placed your job directly in the line of fire with a call like this.
Jim Zorn made that Redskins play call in 2009 for the Redskins. It ended up being the last season he coached there.
